Aniket Sharma

Hello! I am Aniket Sharma. I am currently pursuing M.S. in Civil Engineering at the University of New Mexico. I finished my undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering from IOE, Pulchowk Campus, Tribhuvan University in 2023. I am from Nepal, a country full of natural beauty and culturally diversity. I grew up in Pokhara, which is surrounded by mountains and hills, and I could even see mountains from the rooftop of my house, which is amazing.

During my college years, my daily commute was often frustrating, a short 20-minute bus ride could easily stretch into more than an hour due to traffic congestion and frequent accidents. That experience made me realize the profound impact that transportation has on people’s lives and overall well-being. This realization inspired me to focus my academic and research interests on transportation safety and system improvement so that it serves the community better.

Given this background, I am excited to be part of RUTA-HC as its objective to enhance and improve transportation system for people’s quality of life aligns closely with my own interests. Currently, my research project revolves around how window tinting affects the visual perspective and visual function of a driver. Since New Mexico has lenient rules regarding the allowable VLT (Visible Light Transmittance), I think our research will really persuade the related policymakers about the allowable VLT which can improve the safety of all road users. I am looking forward to learning from professors, seniors, and lab mates, so that I can gain the skills and experience needed to make real impact in improving transportation and, in turn, people’s quality of life. I also hope to collaborate with fellow researchers and contribute in some way to create smarter, safer, and healthier transport systems.

Apart from academics, I like staying active by playing soccer, working out, and spending time in nature helps me stay calm and focused. I also enjoy trying spicy food, and chicken curry is my favorite.
